Respecting the NDA on WildStar beta

Carbine Studios is holding all of the cards for WildStar and those of us not in the beta just have to wait. Which is beyond frustrating. We have to sit back and let things slowly come out of the official PR machine, and no matter how fast we get new revelations, they’re never fast enough. The temptation to look for someone willing to peel back the veil is immense because it beats pressing against the glass and waiting to find out more.   (attach: Do you want to learn more about Wildstar gold ?)

But the NDA is there for a reason.

Speaking as someone who isn’t in the beta but is still talking about the game on a weekly basis, I will be the first to point out that waiting for official information is often like waiting for a solar eclipse before doing even the most basic tasks. It’s frustrating, slow, and irritating. The problem is that the alternative — wherein we just jump on every new piece of leaked information — isn’t good, and it comes out worse in the end.

Creating context before releasing information

ws nextel nda 1 epl 427 Respecting the NDA on WildStar’s beta

The team behind WildStar has a pretty clear picture of how the game is going to work. There are, I assume, large binders with important-sounding names that have overall design goals outlined along with general targets. There are plans for crafting systems, plans for quests, plans for endgame encounters and so forth. If you don’t believe that, you at least probably have the presence of mind to accept that the game is not being developed by people coding blindly and hoping that the result makes a playable game.

You get the idea. There is a picture of what the game will look like as a whole — a picture that we as players currently do not have.

One of the problems I mentioned with dissecting last week’s patch notes is that without context, not everything makes sense. Not everything can make sense. I managed to majorly flub up the distinction between Circles and guilds (which are totally different things) because devoid of a larger context, it made sense. And it was completely wrong. I saw a picture of a hat and assumed I was looking at a haberdashery, then found out that when zoomed out it was a picture of a museum.

Context makes information more relevant. Without having a solid base of established information, I couldn’t have speculated on what the last two classes in the game would be because I couldn’t fit the existing information into a larger framework that made sense. And it still might be wrong.

So why not just tell us everything out of the starting gate, thereby creating plenty of additional context? Well…

Some stuff isn’t ready for prime time

ws nextel nda 2 epl 427 Respecting the NDA on WildStar’s beta

Having a pretty clear picture of how the game is going to work does not always mean that it turns out to be a completely accurate picture. Maybe you finally get your full crafting system in place, and it turns out that players hate it. Maybe the customization system for classes is sub-par. Maybe it just turns out that nobody is all that interested in playing the game you thought was neat, but something else you threw in as a sideline is awesome.

This is why context is created piece by piece, starting with the big items that you know are going to be in place, like the fact that WildStar takes place on Nexus and not in downtown Philadelphia. Then you slowly filter down, showing smaller bits of the picture, pieces that fit into the established whole, changing some elements as some things don’t quite make it through development or don’t work as well as intended.

All of this is normal, but it’s not the way that we think of things working when we’re used to the finished product. You think of an article being written from beginning to end, but you don’t see the times when half the article needs to be rewritten or fixed because it’s just not interesting. We see the finished product of a game that works and we think that it was just a matter of sitting down and programming that game from start to finish, not an iterative process in which elements are added, removed, changed, tweaked, broken, relocated, and so forth.

We don’t see all of this stuff because that’s not for viewing to the general populace. Unless you’re George Lucas, you don’t show off your first draft and then work overtime to make sure the stupid early ideas still fit into the finished product. You don’t want to show off the early version because there’s stuff from the early version that won’t be in the finished version.

This beta may not be the sort that completely redoes the game once or twice; few are. But there’s still stuff that won’t be sticking around.

Giving an impression

When talking about a game, a development team’s goal is invariably to convey a sense of enthusiasm to potential players. That is, really, part of the reason we’re all here. We’re excited. The development team is excited. You can usually find the team almost bursting at the seams to share some piece of information not yet approved by the corporate team.

That’s because just as with birthday presents, if you know everything right away, there’s no thrill of discovery. You get something you might be happy with but that you won’t be excited over. Getting your information slowly teased out, having hints dropped here and there, keeps up the enthusiasm.

You might not like the dance. Speaking as someone frequently on the same side of said dance as everyone else, I certainly find it frustrating. But I think it’s ultimately better to have to wait than to try to find out what’s happening before it’s ready for my examination.

League of Legends:Fog of War

fogofwar League of Legends:Fog of War

Fog of war refers to the obscuring effect that takes place on areas of the map that are not within the vision range of your allies. This means that, while you can see the topography of any area on the map, you can only see enemy units located near allied units or your champion. Take note of the areas surrounding your allies. Notice that these areas are brighter. These brighter areas are within the sight range of your champion or one of your allied units. Also notice that the rest of the map is somewhat shrouded. These shaded regions are covered by the fog of war. Enemies in these shaded regions cannot be seen until they enter the sight range of one of your allies. When enemies enter the sight range of an allied unit, they will be revealed, unless they are able to turn invisible or they are hiding within brush.

  • Note: There are ways of revealing areas on he map that would normally be shrouded in fog of war. The first is the summoner spell Clairvoyance, which can be placed anywhere on the map to reveal that area for five seconds. Stealthed users are not affected by this spell. The second is to buy consumable Vision or Sight Wards, which place invisible wards on the map that reveal enemy units (vision wards reveal stealthed units) for three minutes. Additionally, certain champion spells, such as Karthus’ Wall of Pain or Corki’s Phosphorus Bomb will reveal portions of the map shrouded by fog of war.

Gameplay

Bot lane

A highly-mobile ranged damage dealer, Lucian punishes enemies for straying too close. Piercing Light offers Lucian significant harass potential, even through minions, forcing enemy carries to decide between missing last hits as they dodge his shots or taking damage as they farm up. Dashing with Relentless Pursuit or landing Ardent Blaze and a follow-up auto attack on escaping targets gives Lucian the speed boost needed to close gaps, score kills or escape a deadly gank.

Lightslinger enables Lucian to fire two auto attacks in quick succession after using his abilities. This offers ample opportunities for the Purifier to bully his lane enemies and take the upper hand in simple duels. On-hit effects such as life steal, slows and red buff proc twice, making Lucian all that more likely to survive tough exchanges and maintain presence in lane.

The Culling, Lucian’s ultimate, is a channeled ability that fires a barrage of bullets in a straight line, damaging the first enemy champion hit. Unlike many channeled abilities, Lucian has the option to dash with Relentless Pursuit as he unleashes The Culling. While on the move, The Culling will continue firing in the same direction as when activated. Simultaneous use of Relentless Pursuit allows Lucian to quickly dash away from his approaching enemies or move in towards fleeing foes. Earning kills with The Culling also refreshes Relentless Pursuit, making Lucian a swift death dealer while his ultimate is active.

Teamfights

Once teamfights break out, Relentless Pursuit enables Lucian to quickly escape unfavorable situations and kite pursuing opponents, or skirt around the enemy team to single out priority targets. When facing off against a group of foes, tagging multiple enemies with Ardent Blaze gives Lucian plenty of targets to peg for a speed boost while Piercing Light rips through the group.

Story

Quote EN Arm yourself as Lucian, the Purifier Flavor1 Arm yourself as Lucian, the Purifier

Lucian wields relic weapons imbued with ancient power and stands a stalwart guardian against the undead. His cold conviction never wavers, even in the face of the maddening horrors he destroys beneath his hail of purifying fire. Lucian walks alone on a grim mission: to purge the spirits of those ensnared in undeath, his eternal beloved among them.

Like the twin relic weapons they wielded, Lucian and his wife Senna were carved from the same stone. Together they battled evil in Runeterra for years, bringing light to darkness and purging those taken by corruption. They were beacons of righteousness: Senna’s dedication to their cause never faltered, while Lucian’s kindness and warmth touched the hearts of the many lives they saved. Two parts of one whole, they were devoted and inseparable.

Though Lucian and Senna witnessed terror that would break most warriors, nothing they had seen compared to the horrors wrought by the Shadow Isles. When the spectral denizens of that accursed place began to manifest across Runeterra, Lucian and Senna hunted them down wherever they appeared. It was grim work, but the fearless pair prevailed until one tragic encounter with the soul-collector Thresh. Lucian and Senna had faced such nightmarish undead before, but never one so deviously clever and cruel. As the terrible battle unfolded, Thresh sprung an unexpected ploy. To Lucian’s horror, the creature tricked Senna and ensnared her soul, trapping her in a spectral prison. Flavor2 Arm yourself as Lucian, the Purifier Nothing could bring her back. Senna was lost, and for the first time, Lucian faced his mission alone.

Though the Warden had taken half of Lucian’s heart, he had also created the Shadow Isles’ most dangerous foe. Lucian became a man of dark determination, one who would stop at nothing to purge the undead from the face of Runeterra. In honor of Senna’s memory, he took up her fallen weapon and vowed to see their mission through to the end. Now wielding both relic weapons, Lucian fights to slay the undead and cleanse the souls of the Shadow Isles. He knows that Senna’s soul is lost, but never loses hope that one day he will bring her peace.

THE RuneScape 3

RuneScape 3 goes live

This ain’t your slightly-older-brother’s RuneScape, folks; RuneScape 3 is hip, happening, and live right now. The latest iteration of Jagex’s browser behemoth is now available to play, and it looks better than ever.

RuneScape 3 isn’t just about a graphical overhaul, although it would be sad to dismiss its visual improvements. The new version includes a customizable interface, six hours of new music, and lots of technical improvements.

Jagex is kicking off RuneScape 3 with the Battle of Lumbridge and the Sixth Age, so get in and start kicking butt from minute one! This event will take place over the span of two months, during which players can ally with a faction and collect divine tears to contribute to their side’s ranking. The studio recommends that players experience it with the Java client and not the still-in-testing HTML5 version.

The team’s also posted a comprehensive FAQ if you have any specific questions about the changes.

Honestly, I think RS3 (or at least the Battle of Lumbridge event) is just what I needed and was waiting for. I got so tired of procrastinating on finishing quests, grinding skills, and blowing all my spins on the Promotion of the Week that I finally crashed and moved on to other games. Now, I may be hooked all over again.

sorenthazsorenthaz

Well, looks like I might give the game another try.

…I’ve lost count of how many times I poke back into the game here and there, lol.  Though my old account is basically unplayable due to his bank being stuffed with Members items which forces me to subscribe if I want to continue on with him…  :/
